Japanese New Year
By Shukumi Togawa

New Year's Day is called "gantan" in Japanese. We have a good time on this day. We have a big meal and drink a lot of sake.

We call New Year's food "osechi." It is served in lacquer boxes that look like picnic boxes. The boxes have a lot of traditional Japanese foods inside such as sweet black beans, chestnuts, rice cakes and other things.

We go to a Shinto shrine to pray for peace. But I think most Japanese have no religion anymore. We just go to the shrine for amusement. When we go to the shrine, we go with our family or friends, and we wear a kimono.
